Monday 31st JanuaryMise-en-scenelo, to explore the use of mise-en-scene in filmsMise-en-scene is made up of five areas:2) Costume, hair and make up1) settings and props3) Facial expressions and body language5) Positioning of characters/ objects within the frame (blocking)4) Lighting and colour
Setting and props
settings and locations play an important part in film-making and are not just 'backgrounds'
Sets are either built from scratch or a great deal of time is spent to find a setting which already exists
Settings can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then taking a different turn
A science fiction film - swords, armour, lasers, new technology, a lab, space, space ships, other planets, guns, weapons
A romantic comedy - a town, roses, a ring, chocolate
A horror film - monsters, haunted houses, a dark and dull location, basement, forests, ghosts, broken flashlights, abandoned buildings, blood, rain, cars, floorboards, flickering lights, black cats, zombies
Costume hair and makeup
costume, hair and make up act as an instant indicator to us of a characters personality, status and job
It tells us immediately whether the film is set in the present and what society/ or culture it will centre around
Certain costumes can signify certain individuals (i.e black cloak of a vampire, Spidey's Spiderman suit)
The first one - country boy, serious face, poor
the second one - has an attitude, girly, spoilt, dramatic, wealthy/rich
The last one - mysterious, poor, doesn't take care of himself, bad person
Facial expressions and body language
Facial expressions provide a clear indicator of how someone is feeling
If someone is smiling broadly, we assume they are happy but we may get a different feeling if this is accompanied by scary music
body language may also indicate how a character feels towards another character or may reflect the state of their relationship
The first one - posh, quiet, concentrated
The second one - they look rough, looks like they have been drinking, they might of had a fight,
lighting and colour
Lighting and colour can be used to achieve a variety of effects
to highlight important characters or objects within the frame
To make characters look mysterious by shading sections of the face and body
To reflect a characters mental state/hidden emotions (i.e bright = happy, dark = disturbed, strobe effect = confused)
low key lighting :
Produces sharp contrasts of light and dark areas
deep, distinct
shadows/ silhouettes are formed
high key lighting:
lighting is natural and realistic to our eyes
produces highly lit sets or a sunny day
The lighting and colour of this scene suggests its dull
Positioning of people/ objects (blocking)
positioning within a frame can draw our attention to an important character/ object
the first one - they are sat far from each other which suggests the scene is very awkward and it looks like they've just had an argument
the second one - it looks like they get along
Monday 14th February
the setting is very old fashioned and so is the props.
the costume, hair and makeup suggests that the two men on either side dressed in red are wealthy however the man in the middle looks like he doesn't belong there because he looks scruffy and poor. The hair on the person in the middle looks really messy and he looks like a pirate by how he is dressed. The two men are body guards i think because they look like their keeping him hostage
the facial expressions on the men on either side looks like their mad and the person in the middle looks ashamed or worried and you can tell that they don't get along
the positioning of the guard men looks like their strong and the man in the middle looks helpless and weak

lo, to explore the disaster movie genre
Disaster movies
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
In Roland Emmerich’s enviro-disasterpiece, climate change sets off a series of events that send massive superstorms across the Earth, hurtling us into a new Ice Age. The plot, much of it involving Dennis Quaid trying to get to Manhattan to save his stranded son Jake Gyllenhaal, is ludicrous but touching. While the totality with which Emmerich has imagined this destruction can’t quite hold a candle to the worldwide annihilation of his later hit 2012, The Day After Tomorrow is an impressive bit of agit-prop — right down to a Dick Cheney–like, climate-change-denying U.S. vice-president who ironically has to lead an exodus into Mexico. For once, we get the sense that this director feels these issues deeply, in his own crude, bombastic way.
1) there are more males in the day after tomorrow
2) Jack hall saves his son who is trapped in the cross - hairs
3) The disaster is a super storm
4) the son got saved
5) the travel is when he has to save his son
6) they are disaster movies
Titanic (1997)
James Cameron’s doomed love story/disaster epic is an ideal combination of teen romance and state-of-the-art action filmmaking. Cameron’s great talent has always been his ability to merge his engineer’s-eye approach to action with his peculiar narrative obsessions. Here, he brings together his love of the sea and his fondness for corny love stories with a great real-life tragedy, and winds up with a film for the ages. As for the litany of complaints about the hokey dialogue: The story of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) works if you accept them as kids — which they clearly are in the film. This is a story about two young people who find each other, fall madly in love, and are then torn apart by unimaginable disaster — one rendered by the obsessive director in minute, breathless, excruciating detail. It’s magnificent, and terrifying.
1) theres more males in titanic
2) they save everyone off of the boat
3) the disaster is the boat sinking
4) the people off the boat got saved
5) the travel is sailing
6) they are disaster movies
Earthquake (1974)
Charlton Heston is the engineer who finds himself rushing through a collapsing Los Angeles to save his mistress (Geneviève Bujold) and her son. Like many disaster movies, this is a turgid soap opera that’s blown apart by chaos. But oh, what glorious chaos! The effects are a bit dated, but director Mark Robson put the city through such a wringer that the breadth of the destruction is breathtaking. Even when it’s clear that what we’re watching are models — and, during one particularly deranged moment, a hand-animated spurt of blood that comes straight at the camera.
1) there are more males in earthquake
2) charlton heston saves his mistress and her son
3) the disaster is the earthquake
4) the people that were in the earthquake got saved
5) the travel is running
6) they are disaster movies

Narrative theory
lo, to effectively develop an idea for a disaster movie
21/3- Good start to your work here, you need to add more detail to all areas. T 1. More detail in summary of your storyline: 2. More detail in Describing when and where your film is set 3. More detail on what is the overall mood of the film? How will you show this through costumes or settings?
1) set in summer, happy setting picnic, group of friends have gone on a hike up the tor on the moor, Storm sets in, they are not prepared. visibility goes, and they can't find their way home, they get separated, and then they have to find each other
Equilibrium everything in the film world is normal (not necessarily good, but it is normal)
Disruption something happens usually caused by the films main antagonist to disrupt normal life
Recognition of disruption the protagonist/s realise that something is wrong in their world or discover the disruption
attempt to solve the main protagonist goes on a journey to solve the disruption
new equilibrium the disruption is solved and a new normally occurs ( things can never be the same as they was before the disruption , but a new normal life is created)
Equilibrium - where is it set? what time period? what is happening to show life is normal?
Disruption - what happened to disrupt normal life?
recognition of disruption - who discovers the disruption? how? what did they do?
Attempt to solve - the longest part of the movie - what do they have to do to stop or escape the disruption?
New equilibrium - after the disruption is solved/ they've escaped, what is the new normal like?
Equilibrium - it is set in summer, it' set 2022 and it shows that it's normal because they are all friends going to hang out which is normal
Disruption - they go for a hike and a storm sets in and they are not prepared and they can't find their way home, they get separated
recognition of disruption - they discover the storm because their caught in it
attempt to solve - they have to try and find each other and once they all find each other they have to find their way out of the storm so their safe
new equilibrium - they are a bit traumatised from it all but one of them has permanent brain damage because she fell
applying prop to my film

donor: gives the hero something special ( power/weapon/wisdom etc) : enables hero to complete quest. Sara encourages the hero to save the girl
helper - supports hero (sidekick) the helper is the girl who falls as she helps her later on
princess: the girl that falls
dispatcher: they all decided to look for her
father of princess - their friends
the false hero - the girl who tells them to leave the girl who falls

Their day out was meant to be a calm, sunny day out
This is a story about some girls who only wanted to enjoy their day out... if only they knew it was going to be a life changing experience for them all. Will they ever find their way home again?

- "I'm so tired" - rubbing eyes, sleeping, yawning, head down, sleepy eyes
- " I'm late for school" - rushing to get ready, running to get to school, panicking
Scene heading/ location
it is located in summer , in the countryside for hiking Action

Cinematographer - The cinematographer works with the director to achieve the overall visual aesthetic of a film, television show, music video, or other type of content
The logistics of a Cinematographer’s position come down to the fundamentals of film production: pre - production , and post - production . The film is essentially conceived three times and it’s the Cinematographer’s job to help shepherd the project through the first two stages and then provide input on the final one.
A cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist, moving an audience through a movie…making them think the way you want them to think, painting pictures in the dark.
salary range - $65,000
Gaffer - The Gaffer is the head of the Lighting and Power Department on a film set. They set up lights and run cables to achieve a visual look.
salary range - $19K to $129K
The Gaffer will have a team of electricians working with them to ensure that the intended lighting plan for a film is executed as desired by the director , cinematographer and other involved creatives
A Gaffer will usually be brought on board to a project during the pre - production phase and stay with it until the conclusion of the production phase. They will work closely with the Director, Cinematographer, and key grip during these phases of production.
Three stages of production :
1) Pre production - work done on a product, especially a film or broadcast , before full scale production begins. Pre-production is the process of planning some of the elements involved in a film, television show, play, or other performance, as distinct from production, and post-production. Pre-production ends when the planning ends and the content starts being produced.
2) Production - the action of making or manufacturing from components or raw materials, or the process of being so manufactured. Production is the process of making or manufacturing goods and products from raw materials or components. In other words, production takes inputs and uses them to create an output which is fit for consumption – a good or product which has value to an end-user or customer.
3) post production - work done on a film or recording after filming or recording has taken place. Post-Production is the stage after production when the filming is wrapped and the editing of the visual and audio materials begins. Post-Production refers to all of the tasks associated with cutting raw footage, assembling that footage, adding music, dubbing, sound effects, just to name a few.
Film Distribution
What does distribution of a film mean?
Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.
How does film distribution work?
A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film. People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew). The film is completed and sent to the studio. The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
How do you get film distribution?
You can do that easily through interrogating the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) website, the Film Distributors' Association's UK Film Release Schedule or via magazines such as Sight & Sound, which lists the UK distributor of every film they review.
What are aspects of film distribution?
There are two types of distribution: leasing and profit-sharing. Leasing, the distributor agrees to pay a fixed amount for the rights to distribute the film. Profit-sharing, the distributor gets a percentage of the profits made from the film. This percentage is usually between 10-50%.
How much do distributors pay for movies?
For a domestic theatrical release, a distributor may ask for a fee of 35% of gross revenues.

most of them have bright colours to make the movie look more eye-catching
they all have the disaster in the picture so it shows what it's about
their mainly male actors
.their tagline are about a negative end
Narrative clues - historical, shows that it is set in the past. You can tell as he's wearing leather and he is holding a spears and it doesn't seem very modern
Genre conventions - It looks like the disaster is going to be something to do with the weather because in the poster the weather looks really bad so it could mean something bad will happen
font style - the title is bold and standing out
Colour palette - The main colours are blue and grey and it seems quite dull and it represents something like water as it shows lightning and the ocean in the poster
Images\tagline - I think the main character is the one on the poster and it seems like a male and the tag line is showing that there is a end but it may be positive as it says "the end of the world... is just the beginning"
Awards/reviews/ratings/quotations - Russell Crowe is a well known actor and he has won many awards so its showing that he is a good actor
